What to know about the Upcoming 2024 Party Primary and General Elections:

September Primary Mail Ballot Request Forms Due:  

August 20, 2024, by 4:00 p.m.

Party Primary Election Early Voting and Emergency Mail Ballot Period Begins:

August 21st, 2024, to September 9th 2024 4:00 p.m.

Early voting will be held at the Clerk's Office starting on August 21st at 8:30 a.m. Voters can cast their ballots during regular business hours until September 9th, 2024, at 4:00 p.m.

General Election mail ballot request forms Due:

October 15, 2024, 4:00 p.m.

General Election Early Voting and Emergency Mail Ballot Period Begins

October 16, 2024, to November 4, 2024 4:00 p.m.

Early voting at the Clerk's Office begins on October 16, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. Voters can cast their ballots during normal business hours until November 4, 2024, at 4:00 p.m.

Important Dates to Remember:

June 24,25, and 26: Declaration of Candidacy Filing Period

Dates for filing declarations to be candidates in primaries or to be

independent candidates in the general election. Candidates for federal office

and independent presidential electors file with the RI Department of State

Elections Division. Candidates for general assembly, local offices, district

committees, and local committees file with local boards of canvassers where

the candidate is registered to vote. [RIGL §17-14-1]

June 27: Deadline to Submit party nominations

For any state office for which no primary nomination has been made and

any local office for which no nomination has been made by any authorized

city, town, ward, or district committee or any duly authorized subcommittee,

state committees of political parties may file party nominations within 24

hours of the deadline for the filing of declarations of candidacy in the same

location where the individual nominated would have filed their declaration of

candidacy for such office. [RIGL §17-12-2(3)]

June 27: Deadline to file City/Town/Ward committee endorsements

City, town, and ward committees file with local boards of canvassers lists of

local candidates having committee endorsements. To be filed not later than the

day after the final day for filing declarations of candidacy. [RIGL§17-12-11]

June 28 Deadline to file state committee endorsements

State committee notifies the RI Department of State Elections Division of the

endorsement of candidates to be voted statewide and by congressional

district. To be filed not later than the second day after the final day for filing

declarations of candidacy.

State committee to file with local boards of canvassers lists of candidates having

committee endorsement when city, town, or district committees failed or

neglected to do so. To be filed within 24 hours after city, town, or district

committees have failed to endorse. [RIGL §17-12-4]

July 2 Pickup nomination papers

First day nomination papers are available. Candidates for federal office

and independent presidential electors (or their designees) obtain

nomination papers from the RI Department of State Elections Division.

Candidates (or their designees) for the following offices from the City of

Providence obtain their nomination papers from the RI Department of State

Elections Division: senator, representative, senatorial and representative

district committees.

All other general assembly, local office, district committee, and local committee

candidates obtain nomination papers from local boards of canvassers where

they filed their declaration of candidacy. Local board prepares within 2 business

days of the final day of filing endorsements.

Persons other than candidates picking up nomination papers from the RI

Department of State Elections Division (148 W. River Street, Providence, RI)

must have written authorization from the candidate.

July 12:  Deadline to submit nomination papers

All candidates (or their designees) except electors for independent

presidential candidates file completed nomination papers with local boards

of canvassers. To be filed on or before the 60th day before the primary.

July 15: Deadline to file objections to candidates-local offices

Final date to file objections to eligibility of candidates or sufficiency of

nomination papers for local offices. Objections to be filed with the local board of

canvassers the next business day after the final date for filing nomination

papers. [RIGL §17-14-13]

July 15: Deadline to file a withdrawal of Candidates-local offices

Final date for local candidates to file withdrawals of candidacy. To be filed where

nomination papers were filed. Note: in the event an objection has been filed,

withdrawal to be filed within 24 hours of decision. [RIGL §17-14-15]

July 19: Deadline to file objections for candidates- federal and state offices

Final date to file objections to eligibility of candidates or sufficiency of

nomination papers for all federal and state offices. Objections to be filed with

the RI Department of State Elections Division by the next business day after

the final date for filing nomination papers. [RIGL §17-14-13]

July 19 Deadline for withdrawals of candidates-federal and state offices

Final date for federal and state candidates to file withdrawals of candidacy. To

be filed where nomination papers were filed.

Note: In the event an objection has been filed, withdrawal to be filed within 24 hours of decision. [RIGL §17-14-15]

September 10 PARTY PRIMARIES  [RIGL §17-15-1]

September 11 by 4 p.m.:  Deadline to submit recount requests

Final date for candidates to request State Board of Elections to conduct a

recount of votes cast at a specific voting location or locations, or for filing other

protests concerning the primary. Must be filed not later than the day following

the primaries. [RIGL §17-15-34]

November 5 ELECTION DAY [RIGL §17-18-5]

November 12 Deadline to submit recount requests

Final date for candidates to request State Board of Elections to conduct a

recount of votes. Petition to be filed within 7 days after the election. [RIGL §§§17-1-7, 17-19-36, 17-19-37]

The Board of Canvassers of the City of Central Falls is responsible for registering residents to vote, managing all elections in the city, and maintaining all election information. The Board of Canvassers works very closely with the Board of Elections and the Secretary of the State’s Office to implement election laws and establish procedures.
